How to Become a Physiotherapist in Canada from India (2026 Guide for BPT/MPT Graduates)

The exact route for Indian-trained physiotherapists to Canadian licensure in 2026: CAPR's Standard credentialling pathway, the 1,025 supervised clinical hours rule, the mandatory language test with minimum scores, the CPTE exam, and a realistic timeline and budget.

Quick answer: Indian-trained physiotherapists become licensed in Canada through CAPR's Standard credentialling pathway: (1) credential assessment of your physiotherapy degree and supervised clinical hours, (2) a mandatory English or French language test — India is not on CAPR's exemption list — (3) a pre-approved Canadian healthcare course, (4) the Canadian Physiotherapy Examination (CPTE), and (5) registration with the provincial College where you'll practise. Realistic total timeline: roughly 12 to 24 months. Every requirement below is sourced from CAPR's published policies.

India sends one of the largest cohorts of Internationally Educated Physiotherapists (IEPTs) to Canada every year. The route is well-trodden — but it is also where the Standard pathway's documentation requirements bite hardest, because everything depends on how quickly your Indian university can produce verifiable records. Here is the process end to end.

Step 1: Credential assessment (the Standard pathway)

India is not on CAPR's Pre-Approved pathway list (Australia, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, and the USA), so Indian graduates apply through the Standard pathway, where CAPR individually assesses your education against Canadian entry-to-practice standards.

What CAPR is checking:

The single best thing an Indian applicant can do early: contact your university for transcripts, curriculum details, and clinical-hour verification before you apply. University response time is the most common bottleneck in the entire process — weeks to months, and entirely outside CAPR's control.

Step 2: The language test (not optional for Indian graduates)

English-medium education in India does not exempt you. CAPR's exemption list covers education completed in Australia, France, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK, or the US only. You must pass an approved test with minimums in every band — for IELTS that means Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5, Listening 7.0, Speaking 6.5 on a single sitting; CELPIP General and PTE Core are also accepted.

Three rules that trip people up: the testing agency must send results directly to CAPR; scores are valid for two years; and since June 2024 you only submit passing results — failed attempts are not reported. CAPR can begin your assessment before the test, but cannot issue your final results letter without it — so book the test early and run it in parallel with document collection. Step 3: The Canadian healthcare course

All applicants complete one of two pre-approved courses about the Canadian healthcare system — offered by the University of Toronto ("Physiotherapy Practice within the Canadian Health Care Context") or the University of Alberta ("Physiotherapy Practice in the Canadian Healthcare System"). Do this in parallel with credentialling, not after.

Step 4: The CPTE

With a completed credential assessment, you're eligible to apply for the Canadian Physiotherapy Examination — since January 2026, a single exam with a 100-point Written section and a 150-point Oral section taken the same day. The Oral is 60% of the points, and it examines verbalized clinical reasoning — the skill Indian graduates most often under-prepare, because Indian physiotherapy education is typically strong on content and lighter on examiner-facing case presentation. Start with what changed in the 2026 blueprint and how the exam is scored.

The exam fee is $2,500 (full fee schedule), and sittings have application deadlines well before the exam date — choose your sitting strategically.

Step 5: Provincial registration

Passing the CPTE doesn't itself let you practise: you then register with the regulatory College of your intended province (each has its own process and timeline, typically weeks to a few months). Quebec runs its own system outside CAPR entirely.
